The maintenance period of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu will be reduced by two hours starting this Saturday.

With the reduction in maintenance time, the airport’s operating hours will be extended.

Since last October, the airport has been operating for only 14 hours a day, but starting this Saturday, it will operate for 16 hours, according to the airport office.

Previously, flights were halted from 10 PM, but from Saturday onward, the airport will close at 11 PM and reopen at 7 AM, as stated by Dipendra Shrestha, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority’s Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project.

The project is working on expanding the parallel taxiway on the southwest side of the airport, the international apron on the north side, and the hangar apron on the east side.

The construction work at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has been carried out in multiple phases to upgrade its infrastructure and enhance its operational capacity. Major renovation efforts began in recent years, focusing on runway and taxiway improvements. In 2019, the airport underwent a significant runway rehabilitation project, which required partial closures and nighttime work to minimize disruption to flights. Following this, additional upgrades, including apron expansion and lighting system enhancements, were carried out to accommodate increasing air traffic and improve safety standards.

More recently, the airport has been undergoing further expansion and maintenance work, particularly in the southwest parallel taxiway, the northern international apron, and the eastern hangar apron. As part of these efforts, the airport’s operational hours were temporarily reduced, limiting flights to 14 hours per day. However, with progress in the construction work, the maintenance period has been reduced, allowing for extended operational hours. These improvements aim to increase TIA’s capacity, streamline aircraft movement, and modernize Nepal’s primary international gateway to meet growing aviation demands.
