Saurya Airlines Crash

On July 24, 2024, a Saurya Airlines Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, resulting in 18 fatalities. The captain was the sole survivor, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The crash is under investigation, with initial reports suggesting a runway excursion as a potential cause.

European Union Ban on Nepali Airlines

As of December 16, 2024, the European Commission has maintained its ban on Nepali airlines, citing unresolved aviation safety concerns. This decision continues to restrict Nepali carriers from operating within European Union airspace. 

Everest Helicopter Flight Restrictions

A dispute has arisen between Nepal’s aviation regulator and Sagarmatha National Park authorities over a proposed ban on helicopter flights over the park during Everest sightseeing tours, set to commence on January 1. The aviation regulator has instructed helicopter operators to continue flights pending an official decision, highlighting tensions between tourism interests and conservation efforts.

Pokhara International Airport Controversy

Pokhara International Airport, constructed with Chinese assistance and inaugurated in January 2023, has faced scrutiny over inflated construction costs and operational challenges. Concerns have been raised about Nepal’s increasing debt to China, with the airport potentially becoming a financial burden due to limited international flights and revenue generation. 

Belt and Road Initiative Agreement with China

In December 2024, Nepal signed a framework agreement with China under the Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to advance infrastructure projects, including potential upgrades to aviation facilities. This agreement seeks to enhance Nepal’s connectivity and economic development, though debates continue regarding the financial implications of such projects.
