Market Share of Nepal Airlines Plummets from 25 to 12 Percent

In the first three months of 2024, the market share of the National Flag Carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has decreased by 25 percent to 12 percent, with Qatar Airways leading in increased passenger bookings. Within three months of 2024, the Kathmandu Airport witnessed 1.24 million international air travels.

The market share of Nepal Airlines Corporation decreased continuously in the first three months, with a decline from 2 percent to less than 1 percent. Not only did the market share decline, but the monthly revenue also decreased from 400 to 500 million rupees.

The market share of Nepal Airlines Corporation has been continuously decreasing. With the decline in market share, the presence of foreign airline companies has increased.

According to data provided by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) Tribhuvan International Airport Office, Nepal Airlines Corporation’s market share dropped by 12.12 percent in 2024.

The market share of NAC was 14.20 percent until 2023. With the grounding of one of NAC’s narrow-body aircraft, the market share decreased further. With the arrival of the team led by NAC’s executive chairman Yuvaraj Adhikari, the market share of the corporation has decreased further.

The corporation achieved a 25 percent market share in 2020, which dropped to 10.79 percent in 2023. Nepal Airlines Corporation had a market share of 14.20 percent in international air travels in 2023.

The market share of Nepal Airlines Corporation decreased by more than 2 percent in the first three months of 2024. Not only did the market share decrease, but the monthly revenue also decreased from 400 to 500 million rupees.

According to the data provided by the Airport Office, a total of 1,240,884 passengers traveled internationally from the Kathmandu Airport in the first three months of 2024.

Out of this, 150,488 passengers traveled by Nepal Airlines’ aircraft. The series of aircraft groundings due to management inefficiencies has been increasing, affecting both market share and revenue.

Qatar Airways has become the number one company providing international air services to the increasing number of passengers in the first three months of 2024. Qatar Airways provided international air services to 156,447 passengers through the Kathmandu Airport in just three months.

Nepal Airlines stands second in the number of increased passenger bookings. Nepal Airlines provided services to 150,488 passengers.

Similarly, Himalaya Airlines stands third in the number of increased passenger bookings. Himalaya Airlines provided international air services to 130,127 passengers.

Indigo provided international air services to 118,159 passengers, Air India to 102,247 passengers, and Fly Dubai to 131 passengers.

How many passengers in which month?

According to the Airport Office, 392,848 passengers traveled internationally from Kathmandu Airport in January.

Similarly, 395,347 passengers traveled in February, and 452,689 passengers traveled in March. A total of 8,186 flights and landings were made in three months.
