Virgin Atlantic has fired a female pilot after discovering that she was simultaneously employed by KM Malta Airlines. First Officer Danica Theuma had reportedly been working for both airlines since at least December 2023, using her mandatory rest periods.
This violates international safety regulations concerning pilot duty times and rest periods, crucial for ensuring crew and passenger safety. However, it remains unclear how the pilot managed to hold a second job at KM Malta Airlines while meeting Virgin Atlantic’s scheduling requirements.
While Virgin Atlantic immediately fired Theuma upon discovering the double employment, KM Malta Airlines only suspended the pilot for a short period before reinstating her, rather than terminating her employment.
First Officer Danica Theuma, a pilot for Virgin Atlantic pilot has been fired on the spot after airline bosses found out she was moonlighting and working for another airline on her days off.
Theuma was sacked immediately by Virgin Atlantic after they found out about her dual employment only by chance.
Meanwhile, Malta’s new state-funded air carrier, KM Malta Airlines, initially suspended her but has since reinstated her to the cockpit, allowing her to continue to fly for the airline.
It is believed Theuma had been doing double duty at both airlines since at least December 2023, until she was caught in May.
