Collision of Korean Air and Cathay Pacific in Japan

A ground collision occurred involving Korean Air’s Airbus A330-300 and a Cathay Pacific Boeing 777-300 today at New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Japan. Two wide body heavy aircraft have collided on ground resulting medium damage to the aircrafts.

According to Korean Air, the incident happened during pushback for Korean flight ‘KE766′. The pushback vehicle slipped due to snow on the ground, causing the airplane’s left wingtip to clip the tail of the parked Cathay Pacific B777-300, resulting in damage to both aircraft.

While the Cathay Pacific plane was empty, the Korean Air flight was carrying 289 passengers and crew members on board. There were no reported injuries.

According to an airline official, the incident took place around 5.30pm local time, while the Korean Air plane was preparing for take-off.

Cathay says flight CX583 from Sapporo to Hong Kong will not operate as scheduled as a result of incident.

No injuries were reported, while no fire or fuel leaks were detected, according to a spokesperson for the local fire department.
